Kefalonia is an island located on the West coast of Greece and has a mild climate along with excellent beaches. Kefalonia has escaped mass tourism and was used for the filming of Captain Corelli's Mandolin, set in wartime Kefalonia. The film, with Nicolas Cage, was a huge success and it put Kefalonia firmly on the 'must visit' list of destinations for a villa holiday.

Greece has a typical Mediterranean climate, which lends itself to mild and often wet winters and dry summers. The country is mostly sunny throughout the year. The northern part of the country can be very cold during the winters, even receiving snow in some areas. Winter is milder to the south.  Simply put, the weather in Greece is perfect for holidaymakers and renting a villa.

Kefalonia Exploring

Kefalonia is a large island with diverse and dramatic scenery. The island has many wonderful bays and inlets which help to form its unusual shape. The northern rocky coastline has small and clean, pebble beaches, just a few minutes' walk from most of the villas, whilst those on the southern shores are long and sandy. Kefalonia is just waiting to be explored and with a good road network, the island is ideal for driving. For those who prefer a slower pace, Kefalonia is a great island for walking, cycling and horse-riding. With the Greek islands of Lefkas, Zante and Ithaca close by, you can take a ferry, motorboat, or yacht to explore the Ionian shores. Or maybe you just want to unwind? Kefalonia Beaches

Kefalonia is unique in that it provides so many diverse holiday locations. Its beaches are no exception. If you are looking for long sweeping sandy bays; little rocky coves; or deserted bays - Kefalonia can easily offer you all of these. One can also enjoy a magnificent view of the sea and sunset from the villas poolside.  

Fiscardo Foki Bay: About 1km south of Fiscardo, along the coastal road, you will reach the secluded "Foki" bay. Its backdrop of Cypress trees makes this a picturesque and often photographed spot while the olive trees provide welcome shade. The bay is perfect for snorkelling around the small sea caves.

Emblissi: At the very north of the island, Emblissi is a delightful, secluded pebble beach shaded by Cyprus trees, with flat rocks on either side suitable for sunbathing. The shallow waters shelve down and the crystal sea here is great for swimming. The waters are too shallow for motorboats to moor here. With stunning views across to Ithaca, the beach is quite small and can get busy in high season as it is just a short drive from Fiscardo.

Argostoli Town

Argostoli is the capital of Kefalonia with a population of around 8000. As it is a working port and town the only tourism is geared towards visiting cruise boats. In Argostoli, you will find cultural and archaeological museums as well as a plethora of restaurants, cafes and a vibrant nightclub.

Speedboat hire is available from Fiscardo with boats ranging from 30 HP to 175 HP RIB boats measuring 6.5 metres.

You can also hire speedboats from Lixouri and Skala.

For those preferring a more leisurely pace there are plenty of motorboats that can be hired for the day from Fiscardo and Assos in the north; Lourdas and Katelios in the south.

Turtles

Kefalonia is one of the northernmost nesting sites of the Loggerhead sea turtles in the world.

There are diminishing numbers of turtles using the southern sandy beaches as nesting grounds as tourism encroaches. In Katelios there is an environmental centre where volunteers monitor the local turtle population in nearby Mounda and other local beaches.

Although the Caretta Caretta is usually a highly migratory species, Kefalonia is unique in hosting a resident population of Loggerhead sea turtles with evidence that a small population of turtles spend the winter in Argostoli in the Koutavos lagoon.
