Meganissi is located in the south of Lefkas and is one of the islets of the Ionian islands. This island is so beautifully untouched and has a peaceful, slow-paced way of life. The busiest it will ever get is at the peak of the high season, with people visiting the island for the day, arriving on their yachts at the main port of Vathi. Which is only one of three towns.
Vathi, is the main town, with a picturesque bay, and full of vibrant houses, with a small scattering of shops and tavernas with a cascading backdrop of pine forests and olive groves. The beaches on Meganissi aren't sandy, however, the tranquillity and serenity more than make up for it. Perfect little beaches that are untouched by tourism, you can hear the crystal blue-green waters and the gentle sea breeze blowing through the olive groves. A handful of these places can be reached from Vathi by dirt tracks and paths, which do go around the coastline of the island, however, a lot of the other bays and caves are only accessible via boat. Boat hire is available in Vathi.
Meganisi has a very interesting history, there have been certificates of findings dating back to the Neolithic Age. The island was originally known as Taphos, who was the son of Poseidon as well as the ruler of the region. After the Roman conquest in 197 BC, Meganisi was part of the Corinthian Colony. That was until the year 1204, the fall of Constantinople to the Crusaders and then given to the Venetians. It doesn't stop there, the island was ruled by the French in 1294 and 1797, the Venetians in 1204 and 1684. Then the Turks had Meganissi from 1797 until 1684. Then in 1810, ruled by the French, fell to the hands of the British. In the year 1821, during the Greek Revolution, Meganissi fought under influence of a powerful leader named Demos Tselios. And then during the second world war, Meganissi was under Italian occupation. It's certainly safe to say, Meganissi, for such a small island has played a very big part in history and is visited by many. The most astounding thing is, during all these years and everything this little island has been a part of, everyone has helped preserves its natural beauty.
